An axle on one of six roller coaster cars broke, causing the accident at Expoland in Osaka, 255 miles west of Tokyo, Kyodo News agency reported. Osaka police official Kaoru Tanaka said a woman was killed. Fire department official Naokazu Norigami said 34 people were taken to hospitals. He said one person sustained a head injury but others were apparently not seriously hurt.

I wonder if Cedar Fair will remove the Togo's from KD and CW now?

Horrible to hear. More pics (close ups of the train) and vid over on the site that must not be named.

Eh, I don't think it's fair to tar all the Togos with the same brush. The one at Expoland was a pretty rough ride, and the American ones are not great - but the one at Mitsui Greenland in Kumamoto is superb. I'm serious, by the way; I could have marathoned on it.

An axle break? That's gotta be a maintenance issue, not something to do with TOGO.

Agree with Richard (again). Togo is sweet, for the most part, in Japan. Just not here.

This is sad all around, though. Too sad.

Thats A Very Bad Crash. It Was the First. I bet It Crashed Because It Didn't Get Inspected Or Fix The ride

Huh?

Isn't this the same thing that happened at Kings Island on Aug 11th 1984 on the King Cobra? Except the train just came to a stop and nobody was seriously hurt.

I posted this in the general buzz forum as well, but here are more details on the accident:

The girl, Yoshino Kogawara, was 19. Her friend, a 20 year old, sitting directly behind her, is in critical condition with a head injury as well.

There are pics on Asahi.com of the wheel assembly from where it detached. This happened on the way down the hill towards the helix, right where the coaster gets most of its speed. The train was almost to the end of the ride, at the valley just after the upwards helix, and just prior to the final curve.

Fortunately, she was killed instantly, so there was no lying there, in pain. Again, it's all very sad.

You may not be able to read it, but here's the link to the Japanese paper, and its photos/drawings to help better explain the tragedy.

That ride was rough, but I wouldn't have expected something like this. What a horrible tragedy.

The Fox article is confusing.. The title of 1 killed (very tragic) and 21 injured (also terrible). That makes sense because the ride can hold up to 24. However deep in the article it said 34 were sent to the hospital..

Makes me wonder what else happened that sent potentially 13 more people to the hospital?

All around awful though..

Was at Canada's Wonderland today and the Skyrider was closed. I guess they will be giving it a thorough in inspection before they open this ride. Skyrider seems to have the same cars as the one that had the accident in Japan.

As ridemcoaster asks about the 13 more people sent to the hospital, these seem to be onlookers who witnessed the crash or just got sick from seeing what happened. (It could have been them on the ride when the accident happened).

Terrible trajedy.

^All togo standups have virtually the same train design so when there's a mishap on one naturally they shut them all down.

I hope CF decides to remove both skyrider & shockwave from CW & KD as a result of this unfortunate accident...CF already has a poor relationship with togo as a result of the whole windjammer fiasco & shockwave has already seen one fatality so that's all the more reason to remove these rides & put something better, and more importantly safer in it's place.
