Kings Island announces Diamondback
Wednesday, August 06, 2008 2:35 PM ET | contributed by Jeff

The biggest and most exciting new attraction in Kings Island's 36-year history, a 5,282-foot long steel hyper roller coaster named Diamondback, will change the landscape for thrill seekers when the ride makes its debut in April 2009.

Diamondback will be the tallest, fastest and meanest roller coaster at Kings Island. The ride will stand 230 feet at its highest point with a first drop of 215 feet at a 74 degree angle and reach speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour. The ride features 10 vertical drops overall including drops of 193, 131, 129, 110 and 106 feet, two helixes - one at 323 degrees and the other at 287 degrees - and a spectacular splashdown ending. The ride experience on Diamondback will last more than three heart-pounding minutes.

Wow. Looks like Nitro.

Very nice!

Sounds like a winner to me. Good name, too.

What, no complaints yet?

Rob Ascough (Edit)     8/6/2008 2:41:46 PM
I see Cedar Fair is going to continue to use the curious seating arrangement that debuted on Behemoth. I hope the front of the train ends up looking like it does in the rendering- pretty cool. As AJ said, looks a lot like Nitro... but with Nitro being my favorite steel coaster, I see that as a very good thing.
tigellinus (Edit)     8/6/2008 2:45:09 PM
My only complaint is having to wait 9 months to ride it!!

Mamoosh (Edit)     8/6/2008 2:47:37 PM
What, no complaints yet?

See the first post, lol.

HeyIsntThatRob? (Edit)     8/6/2008 2:50:03 PM
I'm never going to KI again. This is the worst ride they could add. I thought it was going to be 500ft tall? I thought it was going to have loops? I thought the colors were going to be cool! The name is totally lame! It doesn't even go fast enough.

Nice going Cedar FAIL!!!

Willh51 (Edit)     8/6/2008 2:56:05 PM
Nice! It's about time KI had a good ride. And only one trim!

I do like how the whole ride is huge, but kind of compact, that first drop is over the queue for what, The Crypt? I haven't been CFKI in a while.

This looks great. I love the slight curvature at the bottom of both drops one and two. About time Kings Island got good steel :o)!
ShiveringTim (Edit)     8/6/2008 3:27:44 PM
I'm digging the snake heads on the front of the trains. Nice touch to what looks to be a good ride. I'm glad to have a B&M hyper closer to home now.
CPLady (Edit)     8/6/2008 3:32:38 PM
I might even get the hubby to make a trip for this one. He loves B&M hypers.
john peck (Edit)     8/6/2008 3:37:59 PM
Just not enough charm.
Why couldn't we have gotten a Ferris Wheel instead?

But seriously, what a great looking ride! Im REALLY excited about this!
My wife noticed that they are selling 09 passes already as well.

Hooray for Badnitrus!
Hopman (Edit)     8/6/2008 4:06:51 PM
Looks like this ride is gonna have some "fangs" a& a good "bite" to it. Sorry, bad joke.
Wabash Cannonball (Edit)     8/6/2008 4:28:51 PM
Finally a reason to go back. I haven't been there since 2003.
Rob Ascough (Edit)     8/6/2008 4:38:13 PM
You're not alone Matt. I can't get them to load either. Guess I'll have to try later this evening.
Ensign Smith (Edit)     8/6/2008 4:46:33 PM
Unfortunately, those fangs and bite will come with a nasty rattle . . .
ApolloAndy (Edit)     8/6/2008 4:56:33 PM
Sad that the new trains seem to only be able to carry 32 ppl instead of 36. Do I get something for complaining?
sws (Edit)     8/6/2008 5:55:20 PM
But what happened to all of the trees? Waaaaaa.......
Jeff (Edit)     8/6/2008 6:06:54 PM
I trust Moosh's glowing endorsement of the train arrangement.

The thing that's different about this compared to Nitro is the shape of the hills. Nitro has those sharp hills to accommodate the much shorter single-row trains. These are longer hills like the floaty Intamin rides. And there are lots of them, paired with a whole bunch of really long drops.

I dig it.

TatsuRob (Edit)     8/6/2008 6:07:59 PM
Wow it's took 36 years to come up with this crap! I'd hate to see what they come up with if it took 100 hundred years ... a cloned wild mouse. So CF has spent over 20+ million dollars on a B&M cookie cutter pretty much clone. Then to theme it to a Diamond back with red, yellow, and cream colors with a water splash is just as stupid as SF theming a wooden coaster to Terminator. Heck they could of gotten an Intamin megalite at half the cost and the hype they put out would of been worth it. Cp Magnum which is over what 15 20 years old has a much more interesting layout then this over engineered, over used off the self , over priced B&M. I'm sorry i'm just not impressed at all with this announcement, CF and KI should also be let down with this expensive quasi-clone imo. There is nothing original or creative about this ride from the name to the layout and to boast about 36 years in the making to reveil something as lackluster as this project makes everyone involved with this project look like utter idiots imo. Where the hell is INTAMIN with this land, this terrain they would of created a Masterpiece for KI and for probably a few million less. Hell Vekoma would of created a better ride then this for 22 million dollars. 20+ million for absolutely nothing new/orginal or ground breaking, come on people this is ridiculous.
Acoustic Viscosity (Edit)     8/6/2008 6:24:11 PM
Although it could be better, what they got looks to be one of the best steel coasters ever. I am going back to Ohio next year.
cdrpointcrazy44 (Edit)     8/6/2008 6:27:57 PM
^^To each his own, but Kings Island is pretty much my home park and I'm getting a little tired of riding the same so-so steel coasters over and over again, with exceptions. I'm so down for Diamondback and I'm sure the thousands of guests entering and exiting the park on a day-to-day basis will be, too

The ride is defiantly beyond my expectations. Looks to be, easily, the best *looking* B&M hyper to date. Hopefully it rides as good as it looks!

Finally, a reason to go back to Kings Island!

Acoustic Viscosity (Edit)     8/6/2008 7:15:35 PM
Perhaps the closest thing we'll ever see to a B&M Voyage.
The Mole (Edit)     8/6/2008 8:03:45 PM
Magnum has a more interesting layout? Bahahaha! Yeah, ok, thanks, I hope you're being so overall sarcastic that none of us could tell...
eightdotthree (Edit)     8/6/2008 8:17:33 PM
Looks awesome. This is going to get me back to Kings Island.
Martling (Edit)     8/6/2008 8:23:18 PM
I'm pumped up!!!! Can't wait to head to Kings Island next year. What a beautiful coaster and much needed at Kings Island! I hope the fine people in Virginia and Carolina get their own version in the future at Kings Dominion and Carowinds.

Acoustic Viscosity (Edit)     8/6/2008 8:25:21 PM
I like Magnum more than most, but honestly an interesting layout is not one of its stronger points.
Winston (Edit)     8/6/2008 8:45:04 PM
Ok. Setting money aside now for gas to get to KI next year. Even if it's 10.00 a gallon, I'm there.
Neuski (Edit)     8/6/2008 8:45:57 PM
I would love to see a CoasterBuzz event back at the park. That combo would definitely make me drive up.
Ensign Smith (Edit)     8/6/2008 9:35:46 PM
Well, since I'll actually be at KI tomorrow, I'll make sure and get the first on-site fantasy ride on Diamondback.

BTW, anybody going to Strickers on Sunday?

Wabash Cannonball (Edit)     8/6/2008 10:18:29 PM
I believe that this will be the quintessential nighttime steely and will be at the top of many steel coaster rankings in the future.

I sure hope we see some after dark ERT next year.

LostKause (Edit)     8/6/2008 10:41:00 PM
I'm very impressed. I like the logo a lot! The theme rocks! The layout was not a secret. It looks like a lot of fun!
Kick The Sky (Edit)     8/6/2008 10:57:37 PM
Basically Nitro, which is not a bad thing at all. This is a great addition to the park. It will have monster capacity and eat huge crowds all day long with very few breakdowns. Way to go, Cedar Fair, with a steady, proven winner!
MagnunBarrel (Edit)     8/6/2008 10:59:45 PM
It looks to be a winner for them already. My debate of going this year is settled, I'm not until next year.

It will be interesting to check out the seats considering i have only rode one such B&M like this and it wasn't Behemoth. The front of the trains and the logos and such are about as wicked looking as anything Cedar Fair has done to this point. Although im still trying to figure out the skulls as of late ie Voodoo, but it isn't a kiddy coaster and is justified with the logo for sure.

Somehow the snakes still haven't left Kings Island completely.

Floorless Fan (Edit)     8/6/2008 11:25:46 PM
^ Ensign,

This will be the first time I've missed August at Stricker's since I first started going. We leave for Dollywood on Wednesday and were saving every last penny for the fun we'll be having there. But, if they plan to do a Sunday in October, post the date if you find out while there. Best little park I know...love Tornado...and love the food!

Diamondback looks totally mindblowing to me! That side of the park is going to look so wild with this addition. Did anybody make it to the park for the unveiling today? I got an e-mail about it, was planning on going, but ran out of time to get there.

Arrow Guy (Edit)     8/6/2008 11:53:13 PM
HeyIsntThatRob forgot it's supposed to go underwater too, not just through it.

Loved NITRO so anything similar is probably going to make my top 10.....which is already out of room! Is it '09 yet?

kpjb (Edit)     8/6/2008 11:54:55 PM
Diamondback? Meh. DiamondHawk would have been much better.
WildStangAlex (Edit)     8/6/2008 11:58:30 PM
Agreed, this coaster will be worth a trip to King's Island by itself. They are known for their wood coasters, now it's time to be known for steel as well.
Ensign Smith (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:14:15 AM
Floorless: you bet. I'll make sure to get a ride on Tornado for you. Have a great time in Pigeon Forge. And speaking of Tornadoes, don't forget to ride the Tennessee variety down there.
RatherGoodBear (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:19:42 AM
Hmmph! I looked around the whole site and didn't see a single view of the trash cans that will be installed in the queues, let alone a 360 animation.
Mamoosh (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:36:25 AM
I trust Moosh's glowing endorsement of the train arrangement.

Anyone who remembers my thoughts on Behemoth's trains when the ride was announced knows I was a very, very vocal critic. Much of that was based on the Deja Vu debacle -- those trains were a nightmare -- and that people have been conditioned to visit parks in even numbered groups so no one ends up riding alone and that trains would dispatch with a higher-than-average number of empty seats. I was also under the assumption that the longer trains would mean an (over)engineered track layout (think Nitro, but even more forceless!). B&Ms trains have worked flawlessly for over a decade...why change what works?

Flash forward to my July 4 visit to Canada's Wonderland. Imagine my surprise when I discovered airtime in the "ejector / makes you grab for the bar" variety. Imagine my surprise when I found the queue row for the two front outside seats -- and we all know the outside seats are da money -- empty because the GP was lined up for queue row #1 (the two inside seats) because "that's the front row."

I was immediately won-over with the trains and the ride. If Diamondback is 1/10th the ride Behemoth is not only will it be the best coaster at Kings Island it'll be the best in Ohio.

I haven't been to Kings Island since SOB's opening. SOB sucks, Beast was a shadow of its former self and nothing else thrilled me.

You can bet I'll be back next year.

CoasterDiscern (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:39:21 AM
I love how there are people walking around and spectating at the bottom of the first drop. So Cool!

Behemoth - First drop, Airtime hill, Hairpin, Three more hills, Mid course brakes, Downward helix, final bunny hop.

Diamondback - First drop, Airtime hill, Airtime hill, hairpin, Airtime hill, Mid course brakes, Two airtime hills, upward helix, water splash.

Two different spots there are people watching and spectating. The coaster includes the newly designed trains with a hot, fire, aggressive looking track.

Behemoth is a huge hit a CW, but this new ride makes me jealous. Seriously though, diamondback will be a ton of fun to ride.

The Mole (Edit)     8/7/2008 1:29:03 AM
Moosh, best in Ohio? That's quite a claim right there...

This ride is getting me back to a Cedar Fair park to try this out. I'm looking forward to this ride, it's exactly what KI needs and will hopefully get SoB out of people's heads...

CPJ (Edit)     8/7/2008 1:44:48 AM
2 months into operation, it will close, the snake heads will be stripped from the front... and a third skinny seat will be squeezed into row 2.

;-)

TatsuRob, sounds to me like you wouldn't be happy with anything. I like Intamin and all, but I'm ready to try out a B&M hyper.
rollergator (Edit)     8/7/2008 10:26:33 AM
Here's my question:

How can CF use a name that PARC is already using at one of their parks (Diamondback is the Arrow shuttle loop at FC)? Is the ride name not already trademarked - assuming when the park went from SF ownership to PARC that the trademark would also pass to PARC....

Jeremy, anyone else?

CoasterStreak (Edit)     8/7/2008 10:50:59 AM
^Are they getting away with the name because that this one is Diamondback(w/o space) and the one at FC is Diamond Back (w/ space)?

I finally got to see the animation. Wow! Nice layout. Nice dives along the ground out back. Those hills look like they'll deliver some float time. Nice interactions with the walkways. Nice money shot at the end. I like what I see! Looks like a tight fit for the train in some spots though.
Spinout (Edit)     8/7/2008 11:48:43 AM
I think this is great for us, but why up the coasters at the park? They already have 13 coasters without this new one. Isn't that enough? I went to the park in June, and the parking lot was jammed. Thankfully, a lot of people like to walk around the park instead of just going in the lines.

I think the kids area really helps because usually at the other parks, there aren't many people in those kids areas. That kids area was quite packed for what it was. I think it's too fast for another coaster so soon. They just got Firehawk last year.

Hopefully, this coaster will be similar to SFOG's Goliath, and not like Raging boring Bull.

ApolloAndy (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:26:16 PM
KI has never had a signature coaster. Now they do. If they can put more people through the gate in a sustainable way, why not build another coaster?

Re: Moosh

Best in Ohio? I haven't ridden Maverick, but MF ranks above all the B&M's I've ridden to date. That's quite a claim. We'll see how it (or Behemoth if I ever get up there) live up to it.

Mamoosh (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:43:03 PM
MF ranked above all the B&M hypers I'd ridden...until I rode Behemoth.
Teenage Ninja (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:52:32 PM
Living less than 30 minutes from KI it's going to be hard for me to not be there on opening day. MF is prolly my #1 at this point (out of a very small number of coasters) but if Behemoth is better than MF, I can only imagine what this brings.
Bster (Edit)     8/7/2008 12:56:23 PM
And all this time I thought that the Beast was the signature coaster.
coasterMNguy... (Edit)     8/7/2008 1:48:28 PM
While this looks like it will be incredibly FUN to ride, I agree with TatsuRob: an Intamin MegaLite would be much more exciting.

Whatever happened to the twister-hyper concept? With a small footprint, countless interactions with other parts of the ride, quick drops and turns, I would have imagined we would have seen more of these. We got Fujiyama and then nothing (except, these megalites).

Mamoosh (Edit)     8/7/2008 1:48:45 PM
^^Please understand that just because I liked Behemoth better than Millie doesn't mean you or anyone else will. For example, I happen to like Leap the Dips better than Shivering Timbers and I thought Nitro was a snoozefest.
The Mole (Edit)     8/7/2008 2:26:23 PM
I'm going to be there opening day with my buddy. I'm more excited for this ride than any other once since HXLC...
janfrederick (Edit)     8/7/2008 2:39:57 PM
^^^Would Raging Bull count?
RCMAC (Edit)     8/7/2008 2:45:01 PM
What a beautiful ride, and I can't wait. A few thoughts:

It looks like it's kind of laying on top of KI. PDKI (Pre Diamondback Kings Island) was always designed with the big rides on the fringe of the park, frequently with long walks to get to them. We don't get to do a lot of walking under rides there. This placement almost gives the impression that KI is running out of space! With the bottom of the first drop over the queue for Crypt, it looks like visitors walking along Rivertown will be able to stand below and look directly up the first drop. Riders will also have the sensation of dropping toward the street. Cool as hell. They've used the ravine to great advantage as well, and I think the deeper dips will be better and, hopefully, more surprising than they read on the video.

I think a lot of trees will have to go. That whole area of the park will have a different look, probably very Cedar Fair-ized. Hope not. Maybe Knott's taught them a lesson. (they seem to have caught on with the installation of Pony Express)

It looks like a people eater, and designed so that efficient operation is likely. I take Mamoosh's recommendation of the train style to heart, and I think they look great, too.

Finally, did any Coaster Buzzer (and I'm thinking of that previous million page thread) name the ride correctly? (I said The Horrible Southern Ohio Water Moccasin....) Or does this count as a time that none of us had a clue? Or even a correct guess?

super7* (Edit)     8/7/2008 3:03:50 PM
It should be a good ride and it does help fill out their coaster lineup. They can take out the other 200 ft coaster now and use that space for something worthwhile!

The only thing i think is unfortunate is that it didn't get a 540 spiraling helix like Behemoth and GA Goliath because that is a cool feature of that type of ride.

LostKause (Edit)     8/7/2008 4:17:36 PM
Spinout said..."why up the coasters at the park? They already have 13 coasters without this new one. Isn't that enough? I went to the park in June, and the parking lot was jammed...I think it's too fast for another coaster so soon. They just got Firehawk last year."

...

But Spinout, another high capacity coaster at the park will serve to trim down the lines on all of the other rides. I think that when a park is too busy and is well known for long lines, it's time to start building people eaters.

Jeff (Edit)     8/7/2008 4:56:47 PM
I think all of the trees that had to be removed have been. The footers around the midway are all in place already.
john peck (Edit)     8/7/2008 5:48:03 PM
I love how Cedar Fair liven up the dead spots in their parks.

Lets take CP for example, the added a bunch of new stuff near 12E, put Dragster into a midway that haden't seen any type of new ride since 1998, put Mantis and MF in what was a lower-traffic area and did the Skyhawk/Mavrick additions to the western area.

Now lets take Kings Island...

They built Firehawk in a dead-end area, put a new show into the declining-attendence Festhaus and will be adding The New coaster in a more centralized location when everything else they have makes a ring around the park.

I know I state the obvious, but it's neat to think about.

MikeyB (Edit)     8/7/2008 6:13:29 PM
I have friends and family in a 10 - 15 minute radius of King's Island. I'm too excited for Diamondback already! I agree with everybody; it's about time King's Island not only gets a B & M, but a 200 ft tall steel coaster!!

April 2009 can't get here soon enough! Bring it on!!!

Acoustic Viscosity (Edit)     8/7/2008 8:23:20 PM
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the ride being shorter than The Beast as to not disrespect it.
coasterdude318 (Edit)     8/7/2008 9:40:37 PM
Well, that's probably why they left out the 540* spiraling helix...

How can CF use a name that PARC is already using at one of their parks (Diamondback is the Arrow shuttle loop at FC)? Is the ride name not already trademarked - assuming when the park went from SF ownership to PARC that the trademark would also pass to PARC....

I'm guessing it hasn't been trademarked in years.
