Busch theme parks go greener with biodegradable food containers, other conservation ideas
Wednesday, April 30, 2008 9:16 AM ET | contributed by Jeff

SeaWorld Orlando and other Busch Entertainment Corp. parks are converting their food-service containers and tableware supplies to versions made from materials that are both farm-raised organic — such as corn and bamboo — and biodegradable. That means everything from spoons to pizza boxes will come from the soil and quickly return to it after they have been used.

I love the Busch parks, I don't feel dirty spending my money at any of their parks. Hopefully other parks will step up and start recycling more. I hate seeing a garbage can full of plastics and glass when they could easily have another can right next to it to recycle.

Applauds!

I know for certain the greening initiative is becoming a really important issue where I work. It's only a matter of time until we start seeing green awards given to certain parks if they haven't already started.

Last time we were at SWO, there were employees going thru the trash bins to pick out the recyclable items. Busch is MILES ahead of the curve (in the industry) when it comes to environmental-friendliness....

That's great news. I wish the fast food industry in general would adopt environmentally friendly containers and flatware, or at least offer ways to recycle plastic. There is a tremendous amount of recyclables that go into landfills from the fast food industry alone.

I miss the old garbage cans at Youngstown's Idora Park in the 1970s and early 1980s that had plaster animal heads with open mouths...they would play munching or oink'ing sounds for you to remind you to put your refuse into the large opening in their head, and not on the ground.

You mean Porky the Paper Eater?

One of my earliest amusement park memories.
